Brush tool not editing selection, instead editing whole photo? Help!

I'm trying to use the brush tool to edit the colour in small area of my photo but once I have selected the area and it is highlighted in red, I begin moving the colour sliders and the whole photo is effected, not just by selected area! Any ideas?

    You probably have the slider section collapsed, so you are moving the global sliders while thinking that you move the brush sliders (which are invisible). Look for the small black triangle on the right of ‘Effect’. It should point downward.

    Here is the activated Adjustment brush without the panel collapsed as Johan so correctly mentions above.

    This should give you area-specific editing control. Note I have collapsed the that particular brush Properties at the bottom of the screen shot.
