Question

Can I confirm that Lightroom Classic CANNOT be stopped from syncing the entire contents of Lightroom cloud to our local machine?

Over the last few years, I set Lightroom cloud on my phone to automatically import my phone photos to the cloud. Basically as a first stage backup.

I was trying to set up Lightroom cloud app on Windows to pull down the original files into a folder that I can then import into Lightroom Classic. So that I have them on MY hard drives and can back them up.

That proved basically impossible, in some part because LR Classic was also downloading all the images. And they can’t be in the same sub folders as each other. Fair enough.

So I am taking the step of importing the photos from my phone as properly imported images into LR Classic.

Thats fine. But now I find that I cannot stop LR Classic from downloading ALL the images in the LR cloud (in my case 35GB) to somewhere on my machine. I do NOT need them downloaded. But I cannot STOP them being downloaded. And no I can’t just pause that sync for ever, because then the collections that I WANT to be synced up to Lightroom cloud won’t ever be synced up.

When Lightroom cloud came out with its very limited features, we all asked to be able to send some sets of images from LR Classic up to LR Cloud for mobile usage.

That eventually became possible, but now it has slipped over into malicious compliance. We wanted to be able to sync to cloud, so now Adobe have have it impossible to NOT have the cloud sync to us.

Which, by the way, duplicates what the Lightroom cloud app can already do by downloading and keeping the originals.

At this point, my only option seems to be to delete all the Lightroom cloud images completely, and only use LR cloud as a mobile image viewer from Lightroom Classic.

ANd of course look for other software.

Yes — confirmed, your understanding is correct. Sync in Lightroom Classic is all-or-nothing on the download side: while sync is on, every photo stored in the Lightroom cloud is downloaded into Classic as an original. Unlike uploads (which you control per collection), there is no selective or per-album opt-out for downloads.

    The only controls you have:

    • Pause sync via the cloud icon at the top right — but as you found, that pauses uploads of your synced collections too.

    • Choose where the downloads land and how they're filed: Preferences > Lightroom Sync > “Specify a location for Lightroom ecosystem's images”, plus the subfolder option. Pointing it at a large external drive at least keeps the 35 GB off your internal disk.

    • Reduce what enters the cloud in the first place (e.g. turn off Auto Add in Lightroom on your phone) — that stops new downloads, but anything already in the cloud will still come down while sync is on.

Adobe's own sync FAQ confirms that Lightroom Classic downloads original images from the cloud when sync is turned on: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/desktop/technical-support/workflow-issues/sync-issues/sync-faq.html

Thanks for the reply. I hoped I was missing something, but that seems to not be the case.

In any case, as it happens the search for options and ideas has resulted in being able to setup some code that will pull photos and videos from my iPhone to a staging folder. And I can then import them into Lightroom Classic (to their own area not in with all my DSLR photos).

And this avoids iPhoto applying automatic conversions to your images and videos when you download them.

Also I and my AI agent figured out how to read the AAE files that come with the images, and apply geometry information in LIghtroom Classic like crops, rotates etc to the originals, keeping the maximum information.

The upshot of all this being that I’m going to get a better result than if I let Lightroom Cloud handle the images from my phone.

    Silver lining I guess.
