Can "Import" be stopped automatically cropping

I use Lightroom 5.7.1 as a way of decoding my Sony ARW Images to JPG or TIF format and then as a convenient starting point for using Photomatix or Autopano for fusing and stitching to panoramas

I have known for some time that the jpg image size as stored in LR and when Exporting from LR is smaller than the original ARW dimensions (and all RAW to JPG converters seem to crop in the same way) and I previously had reverted to working directly with the original RAW images in the cases where the top/bottom of portrait images was important

I have just discovered that if the LR  Develop "RESET" option is used directly after importing, then this cut off area is returned for selected images and the image reverts to its RAW dimensions

I do not have any import pre processing rules set up AFAIK amd my camera has the aspect ratio set 4:3

My query is why is this cropping dome at all and can it be overridden automatically without the need to do a RESET each time

    Thanks for that suggestion

I tried that on the Lightroom version of the image in my post above and found it had no effect

I also tried converting the file to DNG and installing the "Recover Edges" plugin. This ran OK and recovered a very tiny portion of the difference between the cr2 image and the jpg image (probably under 5% of the difference)

So I still haven't got to the bottom of this issue

This action makes sure that newly imported images are not longer cropped. It has no effect on existing images. Those images you have to manually reset.

The two images you posted show an uncorrected image and an image with lens corrections applied. Lens corrections will cause a bit of cropping, to correct for the now curved edges. Reset to Adobe default will no longer apply lens corrections automatically, but if you enable this manually, then you will get some cropping again. It’s either one or the other, you can’t have both lens corrections and no cropping.

I think you have hit the nail on the head there. I can either have a full image with lens distortion or a cropped image with lens correction

Where the edge of the cropped image would have been significant such as the top of a church spire or similar I will just have to use the original RAW files as input to other processes and then post processing to try and make manual corrections to distortion, colour corrections etc

Incidentally I got to the bottom of why I get better recovery of edges with the Sony ARW Raw files

The Canon Powershot has a 4/3 sensor and my shooting is also 4/3 so there is no difference between the "Original" and "As Shot" in LR cropping options. My Sony has a 3/2 sensor and the photos are 4/3 so the "Original" puts back a lot of extra image at the edges

    Thanks for all help

Sounds like you have changed the camera defaults by mistake. Select one of the images in Lightroom, and go to the Develop module. Choose the 'Develop - Set Default Settings' menu and press the 'Restore Adobe Default Settings' button in the dialog that follows.

Regarding the above problem concerning automatic cropping when loading RAW (CR2 and ARW) files into Lightroom 5, I have now found that using the RESET as above works for ARW files from my Sony camera but not for CR2 files from my older Canon Powershot S100

The RESET in effect invokes the LR Crop tool and alters the setting from "As Shot" to "Original" and this returns the edge contents lost

I have attached an example of the jpg and cr2 versions of an image taken on the Canon and it seems to be impossible to get the edge contents back into Lightroom after the image has been loaded even using the RESET/Crop Tool method that works for ARW files. It has no effect at all on the cr2 file

I attach screenshots of the jpg and cr2 versions as photographed before input to Lightroom. I cannot get the extra L and R edges to apper as shown on the cr2 image

This would be different from the cropped edges you recover from the other camera when the aspect ratio is set smaller than the full raw size.

It looks like the jpg image from the canon S100 has lens corrections baked into the image from the camera. (notice the black tiles at the bottom of the frame in each)

To get the same in the raw CR2 image you would enable lens corrections in LR.
