Question

Can "missing" folders be reconnected after v12 upgrade?

My auto-update leaves me no choice but to ask if updating my catalog to the new v12 prevents me from connecting "missing" folders from v11?  I was trying to reconnect after the auto-update, but the catalog was doing strange things I've never encountered before. Depending on the answer, I may likely have follow-up questions. Thanks!

(I'm on Monterrey OS 12.1)

Also, I suspect the following link may come into play:

https://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_find_folder/find-folder.htm

From your statement:

", I had to use an extra hard drive. Trying to move the folders back onto my primary drive from my extra HD inside LR wasn't working in v11 either."

  • I suspect you moved (not copy) the images from an internal hard drive, using your OS file manager, not via LrC Folders Panel.
  • I wonder if you moved the folders along with the images, or just the images.
  • I wonder how you moved the photos back into your internal drive
  • I wonder if that was just the images, or the folders with the images
  • I wonder if the original folder names on the internal drive are the same as what you created on the external drive.

As you can see, lots of questions, and answers will probably lead to more questions. Then again, more info up front, less root canal.

Thank you, @GoldingD  and @dj_paige  for your help!
I can't tell you how many times I've tried to tackle the untangling of the broken links of these folders which happened about 2 years ago when I was trying to consolidate different smaller HDs onto a larger HD. It has always been an exercise in frustration. Last night, while I was trying to work on it, more pictures were disappearing while I was trying to reconnect them. Menu options were greyed out that I should've been able to use. It was looking like the same black hole it's been in the past.  Before I started to try to tackle it again today (with your help), I sent out a prayer request to some friends.  The reason you haven't heard from me today is that I was able to get them reconnected after my friends prayed!

Thank you SO MUCH for your willingness to dive into the deep end of this gigantic tangle with me.  I couldn't be happier that all my files are now reconnected, especially since there's no way I could've remembered all the different ways I've tried to reconnect the missing folders in the past 2 years that you were asking for to advise in this process.  I'm so grateful!

This "disappearing" is supposed to happen, it indicates you successfully re-connected the broken links. The photos are now found in the new folder (wherever you told Lightroom Classic to connect them to) and not in the old folder with the broken link.

Ok, did you ever import the photos?

GoldingD, I'm not sure what you're asking. The missing folders are older, they were originally imported awhile ago. I haven't re-imported them from my backups, because I know that can cause other issues.

I can see the images on the HD, and can see most of the images in the LR folders, though a few that I've tried to reconnect have disappeared from their respective subfolders. They don't show up in the total # of pics in the next level up folder, but they are visible, without being in their original subfolder, and not registering as part of the total number of images in the higher up folder. Does that make sense?

Other than, yes, they were imported

About as clear as mud.

Screen captures will help.

Screen captures should include Folders Panel

Folder's panel should be expanded out enough as to see parent folder

The more shown of the Folder panel the better

Showing Library module in grid view may be helpful, loupe not at all.

Also, more info on where the missing folder are.

What hard drive,
What folders

A screenshot using your OS file manager showing those might help.

Info from the past, how you imported, what occued immediatly afyter import, when did the folders, and the photos go missing in LrC

Clarify, in LrC, apparently some images appear? This in All Photos? If you right click on one, and select to shiw in folder, what happens?

You can turn off auto-update. Once your catalog opens in LrC 12, you can reconnect your folders.

Thanks, I will definitely be turning off auto-update. Unfortuantely, it's not letting me reconnect the folders in v12. The files are there on the HD, but it won't let me connect them using the parent folder, or individual folders and I don't know why.

Explain what you are doing and explain exactly what happens. Give details. Lots of details.

Have you already upgraded? Ans as such, those are missing folders in your v`12 catalog?

Yes, LR wouldn't let me into the program without upgrading (is there a way to get around that?). I used to have auto-update off, but I turned it on for something recently, and now here we are. I did a Time Machine back up first, just in case. Yes, the folders are missing in v12, but they were also missing in v11.

Because of a long road trip through several National Parks, I had to use an extra hard drive. Trying to move the folders back onto my primary drive from my extra HD inside LR wasn't working in v11 either. My curiosity is if there's a problem in one version of the catalog, i.e. v11, is it possible to remedy it (reconnect those mising folders) in the next version? Or is there something in the DNA that doesn't allow it? Do we know?
