Can not rename photos

My lightroom is acting all weird today. I am trying to rename my photos as I always do for years. Lightroom looks like it is renaming them but it does not. I also select my images by giving them stars like 5 starts, 4 starts etc. But to my surprise the xmp files do not have that info today so all my culling basically was a waste of time this morning. Does anyone know what causes this?

How to reset preferences: https://www.lightroomqueen.com/how-do-i-reset-lightrooms-preferences/

Scroll down to "With Lightroom running" for the easiest way.

Are the photos available to Lightroom?

Usually when Lightroom is actting odd it's time to reset preferences.

As to XMP, nothing gets written to XMP on the fly unless you've got Automatically Write Changes into XMP turned on in the Metadata section of the Catalog Settings dialog. Should be in the Edit menu for Windows. Otherwise it happens when you manually save. Stars are written but flags are not.
