I can't find visualise spots tool - it used to be where the red box is, but I can never see it despite it showing in tutorials?

Correct answer JP Hess

It is a checkbox on the toolbar. If the toolbar is not being displayed then press the letter T.

That was the right answer back in 2021, but the Visualize Spots button now has been moved; it's not on the Toolbar anymore. It's found opening the Remove tool just above the Basic panel. There's a checkbox to toggle Visualize Spots on and off, and a slider to increase/decrease the gain. And as Rob Cullen suggests, toggling the A key on after toggling Visualize Spots on helps identify them even better.
