Can't import

Hi, I am having issues importing photos into lightroom. Has never happened before. I import how I always have and it says "No photos in previous import" and the folder is empty. Sometimes they go into "All photos" but otherwise they aren't anywhere. Not sure if it's a lightroom issue, external hard drive issue or what. I can import them directly from my memory card but I don't want to do that as they then aren't organized into folders/sessions so it makes culling difficult. 

Anyone had this happen before? Or know how to resolve it?
