Can't use Develop mode

In Lightroom Classic CC, when I select an image in the Library mode and go to Develop mode, the image shows in the Navigator pane but the central pane, the work area, is dead black and I cannot work on the image.  I'm an experienced Lightroom user (pre-CC era) and have never experienced this... can find nothing in the guides, etc. that would indicate why this is happening.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.  I am ready to abandon CC and go back to the last "user owned" version.

Correct answer Just Shoot Me

First thing to try is open the LR Preferences and go to the Performance tab and turn off the option to use the GPU.

If that does not fix your problem do any of your images have an exclamation mark in the upper right hand corner of the thumbnails.

Post back if they do.

That seems to have fixed the problem... thank you!  It was intermittent, so time will tell.  Oh, and none of my images has an exclamation mark in the URH corner... what does that indicate, by the way... a corrupt file?

No it mean the file is missing.

Two main reasons why an image won't show in the develop module.

The GPU setting.

A missing file.

There may be more reasons but they escape me at the moment.
