cannot import in LR on all devices

when I try to import photos from hard drive and card, the thumbnails dont even show up. Not gray, just not there at all. I can see files in my finder window but same folder shows nothing on import screen on imac and macbook. I did recent update thinking that would solve issue and nothing has worked
