Question

Cannot import with LR Classic -- freezes or error message

Hi all

I have a brand new Nikon D850 and my first XQD card.  I am trying to import some test pictures into Lightroom CC.  I updated everything just today.

My first try, the import started then froze in the middle.

Now if I try nothing at all happens.  I see the images on the card with the ones that have imported greyed out.  I get "Importing Files . . ." and then nothing.  When I click the X to stop I am told:

"The following files were not imported because they could not be read or the destination folder is not writable (20)"

Please help.  Lightroom Classic used to work perfectly but I've been having issues in the last month or so.  I would switch to the new LR CC, but I don't love the interface, and for some reason my old imports don't show up on there so I have thousands of files I cannot access.

I have the same issue. Also have a D850 and a brand new XQD card. Only a couple of photos are imported and then I get the notice that my memory card is not removed properly. But the card is not removed at all and is also still viewable in my Finder.

I have a 1TB 15"MacbookPro, Oct. 2017, so also fairly new and bought especially to handle my D850 files.

Copying the files via Finder to my hard disk is not a problem at all, so that really gives me the idea it has to do with LR.

I have LR CC Classic, latest version. Really am puzzled to what the issue can be.

That is a sign that the reader or cable has an intermittent or complete loss of connection. it could also be an intermittent failure of the USB  port. Check all three with different components or USB port.

My rMBP came new with an intermittent/failing USB port.

@KR Seals: it works fine on any port via Finder, copying or viewing files on the XQD card, so I doubt it has anything to do with the USB port?

Ok, start with ruling out whether the problem is importing into LR or copying from the card. To do so, use Explorer/Finder to Copy the Photos to the hard drive and then try importing them into Lightroom from the hard drive. Does that work?

No, that doesn't seem to work either.  It says "Importing Files . . . " but nothing is happening beyond that.  It did check off the images that hadn't been imported previously and greyed out the others.  I suppose it could be going very very very slowly -- I will also try closing and see what happens.

The card I used is brand new.
