Canon 5D Mk IV tethering issues

I'm having problems connecting a 5D Mk IV to a new Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 computer running Windows 11 for tethered shooting with Lightroom Classic 12.1.

The XPS 13 only has USB-C ports so I'm using a USB 3 Micro B cable (camera end) to USB 3 cable with a USB 3-to-USB-C adapter to connect to the computer.  File Explorer shows the camera is connected.  Lightroom, however, shows that the camera is not detected.

The same camera + cable combination works reliabily on a Dell XPS 15 running Windows 10 (less the USB 3-to-USB-C adapter, since that computer has USB 3 ports).

I've tried different ports, different cables, and different adapters, but I can't get Lightroom to detect the camera on the XPS 13.  I've also tried the troubleshooting steps at https://helpx.adobe.com/ca/lightroom-classic/kb/troubleshoot-tethered-capture-lightroom.html.  All computer drivers are up to date.  Camera firmware is the latest (1.3.1).

Any ideas?

I have tested a 5D Mark IV against a Lenovo Win 11 laptop and it detects immediately by the OS and by Lightroom Classic 12.1.

I would recommend reviewing the doc you linked and carefully repeating these. It sounds like another application (EOS Utility?) may have commandeered the camera making it unavailable for tethering connection.

I forgot to mention two more things:

  • I've checked Device Manager on the XPS 13.  There are no yellow exclamations or other oddities.
  • To eliminate the USB 3-to-USB-C adapter, I tried using that on the XPS 15 to connect to a USB-C port and everything works in Lightroom.
