Captions lost completely - whole catalog

Today I noticed that the captions of my last trip to Chile where all gone. First I thougt I did a mistake with automatic sync (apply color code to all selected Chile files, add general keywords, ....). I restored some catalog backups, latest from january, captions gone already in these backups. Keywords are kept.

Then I looked up files of previous travel and found in all examples (e.g. folders from 2020) that the  caption field is completely empty. All. Horror szenario.

What I noticed some days ago while working on my Chile data: I modified a wrong caption entry, moved to another picture, and the wrong caption was displayed again, kind of database rollback/write protection. This happened when the hard disk with the files was disconnected. Connecting the hard disk, changing a caption was kept in the catalog. This just as a side note.

What I have a available: the backups of version changes - backup V12 from mid december should have all my older travel files, I returned from Chile just some days before, and updated to V13.

My single catalog is set up to save .xmp files as well. Currently I run V 13.1, build 202312111226-.... on windows  10 professional.

Please suggest how to analyze this further and to fix this.

Hi dj_paige,

thanks for looking at this. I forgot the question mark when asking if this approach is reasonable. I see a need to export my Chile data as catalog because I imported them after the upgrade V12->V13, I developed the files, and keywords still exist, just the captions are gone.
Will go this route and update here on the results, thanks.

Read bullet 5 at the link I gave

I can close this - its only a display issue. I did the restores without success. Then I opened some files in PS, captions are there. There is a little symbol  next to metadata 'show only fields that are editable'. Must have hit this while trying to rearrange some metadata fields.

But it does not work as I would expect (exclude e.g. exif data)  - the caption field is editable, but existing data in editable fields are not shown. I moved back to display & edit.

Does this mean that the backup from V12 should have the captions from Chile? It isn't clear to me what it means.

If it does mean that the backup from V12 should have the captions from Chile, then open this backup and see if the captions are in there.

Status: files until mid december should - hopefully - be ok in the V12 backup.

I upgraded to V13 and loaded my new Chile files into LR. At some point in time the added captions are gone - I usually do captions first, keywording later, re-using parts of the description, what worked at some time.

Would this be a reasonable approach:

1) Export the newer Chile data as single catalog

2) Install V12 in addition to V13

3) Import/load V12 backup into version 12

4) Upgrade this to V13

5) Add/import catalog with newer files created in 1). Caption will need to be redone.

You begin with the word "Status" but I have to say I don't understand whether you have found the captions in V12 or not.
