In Lightroom CC I was forced to do an upgrade on my catalog file which gave me a NEW file named the same as original but with a "-2" addition. Now the size of my locate file has gone from 1.2GB down to 843MB. What has happened here and have I lost picture files?

Gary,

That's normal. Lightroom Classic compresses part of the catalogue, resulting in a significantly smaller catalogue after the conversion.

Please be aware there are no "picture files" contained in the Catalog File, there is only data about the location of the files and the changes and metadata you have added and edits done to the files.
