catalog version compatibility

We have installed on our campus "Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC v2015.14" which is part of the CC 2017 apps, and students are working at home with Lightroom Classic CC.  When they bring their catalogs to campus on an external storage device they are unable to open the catalog with our version of Lightroom.

It appears that once a catalog from a previous version of Lightroom has been updated using the most recent version (Classic CC) that catalog can no longer be opened in the previous version(s).  Is this accurate?

If this is not completely accurate, or there are more specific details to be had, please point me in the right direction on Adobe's site to find those details.

Thanks.

Yes, that's accurate, catalogs are never backwards compatible. So why do you still use Lightroom CC2015 at the campus? Lightroom Classic is the next version and should be part of your license.

    Thanks for the info...

You are correct to assume our license does include all the current versions.  We aim to not change versions during the semester, I just wish Adobe would get on my schedule.  ;^)
