Question

Clone tool produces worse results in LR 13.3.1 than 13.2

The clone tool in LR 13.3.1 does significantly worse on power lines against a blue sky than in LR 13.2.

Here's an example, LR 13.2 followed by 13.3.1:

Some experimentation shows that for a given brush size, LR 13.2 records many more dabs in the develop setting RetouchAreas than LR 13.3.1.   In the example above, LR 13.2 recorded 142 dabs, while LR 13.3.1 recorded only 70 dabs. Perhaps this is the cause of the poorer results in LR 13.3.1.

Note that LR 13.3 changed the units of the brush sizes. In the example above, I chose size 77 in LR 13.2 and size 43 in LR 13.3.1, yielding brush radii very close in actual size. But testing shows nearly identical results picking sizes one unit larger or smaller.

It contains two catalog files, clone-13-2.lrcat and clone-13-3.lrcat, along with the photo shown in the example above, with the clone tool applied to the photo in each catalog, as shown above.

Hmm, when I set Feathering to 0, then LR 13.2 and LR 13.3 produce very similar results, but the hard edge around the cloned area is distinctly noticeable, especially in the full photo.

But LR 13.3.1 should produce the same results as LR 13.3 when Feathering is set to 100.

Hi John,

Is it possible it's because you have feathering set to 100. I find that if I move feather closer to 0 it works famously. What do you think?

More evidence this is caused the lower density of dabs recorded by LR 13.3.1 in RetouchAreas compared to LR 13.2.  When I make multiple passes over the power line without letting up on the mouse button, there are more dabs in the stroke and the results get better:

1 pass, 146 dabs:

2 passes, 299 dabs:

3 passes, 457 dabs:
