the preferred procedure states

Back up all of your local originals.

Caution:

If you have originals on your hard-drive that are not synced to the cloud, it is recommended that you back up your 'Originals' folder before proceeding to the next step.

what exactly is meant by local originals?

Thank you!

If you are using LR Classic, the Original Traditional version of LR, all your images are stored on the hard drive or Drives connected to your computer. The Auto backup of the LR Classic catalog only Backs Up the actual Catalog File and does nothing to Back Up the actual images.

You need to use some other system to make a copy, or better Multiple Copies (Back Ups), of those images to some other drive, internal or external, other than where they are currently stored.

Simple fact is hard drives fail, Computers fail, if you don't have backups of all your important files, Images Documents, Whatever, then at some point you will lose all of them.

Where do you read "preferred procedure"?

Lightroom-CLASSIC needs all you camera photos (files) stored in connected local hard-drives.

These camera files are your "local originals". (They are NOT stored in the Catalog!)

If the hard-drive with your "local originals" fails for any reason- you have lost your photos.

So the advice is - you must backup your "local originals" to another physical hard-drive. This requires your effort with the OS or other software.

The Lightroom 'Backup' (when you exit) only backs up the Catalog, NOT your photos.

Regards. My System: Windows-11, Lightroom-Classic 15.3, Photoshop 27.5, ACR 18.3, Lightroom 9.3, Lr-iOS 10.4.0, Bridge 16.0.3 .
