Compare mode sync button greyed out

In the Compare mode the Sync button next to the Zoom slider is greyed out and I do not know why. Two photos are showing, which is a common cause but not here. Please see the attached screen shot.

I am running LR Classic 14.3.1 on Mac OS 15.5.

Any help would be appreciated.

The [Sync] button in Compare mode is for syncing (making the same) the ZOOM preview of the two images being compared. This will require the padlock to be unlocked.
