Converting Presets to XMP W/ LR C CC V7.3

Ok I just installed the 7.3 update and when opening LR for the first time I got a dialog box that said something about converting all Presets to XMP files.

Searching my drives I see that a bunch of files were converted on 4/3/2018 (US Date format) and are in C:\Users\MyUserName\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\Settings and have a XMP extension. Also in the C:\ "All Users" User profile and in ProgramData folder and since I have LR installed on my 😧 drive there are some in there also. All with modified dates from 3/22/2018 to 3/29/2018 and 4/3/2018 as mentioned above.

I know for sure I didn't modify them so this must be part of the current update.

It seems that all the old LR default presets that users could not delete are now in the form of XMP files and can be deleted.

Does anyone know if that is true?

Right mouse click USER PRESETS in lightroom, click IMPORT.

Import your old *.LRTEMPLATE files, and it will convert them to *.xmp

I am just updating to the new version, and have the following popup dialog box, which has not gone away after 45 minutes.  I have quite a few presets, but not probably more than many other users.

I'm on a Mac.  Should I Force Quit now, or leave it open for another hour?

That is indeed very long. Maybe there is some special preset that chokes Lightroom when it tries to convert it. I would leave it open for a bit longer, but of course you can't wait forever.

I let it run for 2 hours, never went away. After force quit, it was gone.

Yes, that is true. Presets are now in XMP format and stored in a different place, because they are now shared with Camera Raw. And you can indeed remove the default presets. Your old presets are still in the same place. They are renamed with a tilde in front of them (so next time Lightroom knows they are already converted), but don't worry about that. Their internal name has not been changed, so if you would ever downgrade Lightroom, your presets would be there as always, and without that tilde.

I'm not seeing any files with a tilde as the first character.

Your old personal presets should still be stored in their original location. Open Lightroom preferences>presets and click on button labelled 'Show Lightroom Presets Folder'. This should take you to the Lightroom folder containing subfolders presets, plugins, templates, etc. The old Lightroom presets folder is usually named 'Develop Presets'.

No I don't know - but XMP is among other things, the file extension for a preset to be used with ACR.

Perhaps it's the very opposite - these might now go and "clutter up" ACR as WELL...! (grin)
