Question

Copy and paste collection memberships from one photo to another

Suppose I have a photo (photo 1) that belongs to collections A, B, C, and D.

Now I want to add another photo (photo 2) to all the collections that already contain photo 1.

Is it possible to copy the collection memberships from photo 1 and paste them into photo 2, so I don't have to add photo 2 to each collection individually?

A thinking out-of-the-box solution (although you haven't told us the broader task that this is a part of)

I recommend using keywords, not collections, for most types of organizing. Had you reached this point with photo 1 having keywords A B C and D, it is very simple to copy and paste all of the keywords onto photo 2.

I often use keywords, but for some tasks I've switched to collections because they work better for me. Going into details would be too lengthy, and most of the time collections work fine in my workflow (I rarely have to move photos between collections).

The main problem is that you lose membership in collections when you edit photos with external programs. It is a tedious task to then add the edited copy to all the collections where the original photo is located.

At least now I know that copying and pasting memberships is not possible (thanks to JohanElzenga) and maybe I'll rethink parts of my workflow (thanks to dj_paige).

No, you cannot copy/paste collection memberships. You'll have to drag & drop the photo on each collection you want to add it to.
