Corrupted files while moving to external drive

I recently moved a series of JPEG images from Lightroom CC to an external drive. Apparently, the files were corrupted during the transfer. When attempt to open them from the external drive, I receive a message saying the JPEG file is corrupted and cannot be opened. Any insights on what happened?

No images are "IN" LR, either LR Classic CC or LR CC the cloud based version. Both of these programs are Database programs and only Reference image files from where they are store on hard drives connected to your system. In the case of LR CC they are then Uploaded to the clouds and possible, if you have the option selected, a copy of them is left on your drive.

So you can't MOVE images From LR to a hard drive. They are already on a hard drive. You move them from one HDD to another HDD, whether internal or external. As stated above it is hardware malfunction that causes file corruption.

So hopefully you do have a backup of all those files.

    Hardware malfunction causes file corruption.

Restore the files from your (hopefully uncorrupted) backups.
