Corrupting Images on Import to Lightroom Classic

ISSUE:  When Importing RAW photos from SD Card 15% to 20% of photos become corrupted.  This is consistently the case.

 

When opening the RAW files from the SD Card direct into Adobe Photoshop 24.1.1 the images are perfect and can then be imported into Lightroom Classic.

 

I have tried various cards with the same result.

What general process are you using to import? By this I mean:

 

  • Importing within LrC, selecting Copy, or Copy as DNG

or

  • Copying from SD card to hard drive first, using Finder, then importing into LrC, selecting Add.

 

If the former, have you attempted the latter

 

What method of communicating  the SD card are you using? By this zi mean:

 

  • Removing SD card from camera, placing in SD card reader
  • Keeping SD card in camera, connecting via USB cable
  • Keeping SD card in camera, connecting via WiFi. 

 

If the latter two, especially thevWiFi, have you tried a actual SD card reader?

 

If a SD card reader, is that:

 

  • external (USB cable)

or

  • internal (tyically on laptop)
  •  

Is a USB cable going bad, is a SD card reader going bad.

Much appreciated. I have decided to replace my relatively new SD card
reader with one with a direct USB connection - no cable. I hope that
works.

I can see the attachments and yes, they look corrupted. What dj_paige said is spot on; it's not Lightroom Classic; it's your card, card reader, cable, etc. 

The JPEG previews embedded into the raw may look fine, and the images can still be corrupted. In fact, you could try converting to DNG on import, I bet LR pops an error that something is wrong here. Get the card, card reader, etc checked out ASAP!

Hello, @jonathonb36879260 — did you read what was said? It could be any one of a number of pieces of hardware. It might be that a new card reader fixes the problem; but maybe it is something else. You need to diagnose the problem by trying to isolate the piece of hardware that causes the problem. That's what I said... and @TheDigitalDog said "Get the card, card reader, etc checked out ASAP!" It could be any one of a number of things.

I can't see your file attachments (or anyone else's file attachments). Please use the "Insert Photos" icon to include your screen captures in your reply.

 

Corrupted files are always hardware errors. If it is not the camera card, then it could be anything else that touches the image files, including card reader or USB cable/USB port, hard disk and even computer memory. You need to test all of these to see if you can isolate the cause.
