Question

CPU usage even in idle, when in Develop module

In develop module, even if idle, the CPU usage is 60-85% at all times, what causes the browser to slow down and the entire system slows down. As soon I switch to Library, CPU usage returns to minimal. As soon I return to Develop, the CPU jumps back up, even listening to a video in 720p is not possible. Browser chokes for seconds, frames freeze and skip.

I run W11 Pro 26H2, OS Build is current 26300.9711

The hardware is a Dell 5820 with:
Processor    Intel(R) Xeon(R) W-2223 CPU @ 3.60GHz (3.60 GHz)
Installed RAM    48.0 GB (47.7 GB usable)
Graphics card    NVIDIA RTX PRO 2000 Blackwell (16 GB)
Storage    11.06 TB of 22.32 TB used
System type    64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

Building on @CORCTON34033231’s advice, you can download the latest production branch driver for the RTX PRO 2000 Blackwell (597.30, 10/22/26) from here:

    https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/details/283798/

Your current version (596.86, 7/30/26) is only a few months old, but it’s always best to be on the latest production branch or Studio driver.

Hi Thomas — thanks for the update. If the NVIDIA app download stays at 0 bytes, try downloading the driver directly from NVIDIA's website instead: Adobe's GPU guide (Solution 4) specifically recommends downloading the most recent driver directly from the graphics card manufacturer's website. Once it is downloaded, perform a clean installation of the driver, then turn Use Graphics Processor back on in Preferences > Performance, relaunch Lightroom Classic, and check whether the idle CPU usage in Develop changes. Guide: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/desktop/technical-support/technical-issues/gpu-issues/troubleshoot-gpu.html — let us know how it goes!

    (1) and (3) did not helped.
There is a new NVIDIA driver, which I am attempting to obtain from NVIDIA using their Nvidia-App.
My driver is 596.86, they have apparently V 616.92. The download does not start, indicates 0 bytes downloaded so far.

    Hi ThomasH_on_the_web,

Adobe's official GPU troubleshooting document for Lightroom Classic covers cases where Lightroom Classic "crashes or freezes in general, or slows without explanation." Here are its solutions, in the document's order:

Solution 1: Disable the graphics processor to quickly narrow down the issue

    1. Go to Edit > Preferences > Performance.

    2. From the Use Graphics Processor drop-down menu, select Off.

    3. Quit and relaunch Lightroom Classic.

If the problem goes away, the document says the graphics processor or driver is likely the issue and points to Solution 4. If the problem still occurs, the document says the graphics processor is not the cause.

Solution 2 covers manually disabling the graphics processor by editing the preferences file, for cases where Lightroom Classic crashes before you can change the setting in Preferences.

Solution 3: Force Lightroom Classic to use Windows DirectX

Check the Graphics Processor Info section under Help > System Info, quit Lightroom Classic, delete the Camera Raw GPU Config.txt file (located in the Adobe Lightroom Classic folder under AppData > Roaming > Adobe > CameraRaw > GPU), and relaunch Lightroom Classic.

Solution 4: GPU and graphics driver troubleshooting steps, in order

    - Confirm that you're using the latest version of Lightroom Classic (Help > Updates).

    - Confirm that your graphics card is compatible with Lightroom Classic.

    - Update your graphics card driver, downloading the most recent driver directly from the graphics card manufacturer's website (the document notes that Windows Update won't always give you the latest drivers).

    - Perform a clean installation of your graphics card driver.

    - Disable third-party graphics accelerators / GPU overclocking utilities.

After performing these steps, the document suggests confirming the results by enabling the Use Graphics Processor option again in Preferences > Performance.
