CR2 Imports Look Corrupt

Just returned from Cuba and imported nearly 5,000 CR2 files into LR Classic and a handful of these images appear as if the sensor on my camera is going bad.  I sent my Canon 5D MIV into Canon for a diagnostic and fortunately it's not the sensor.  They asked me to install their Digital Photo Express product and reimport these same pictures and when I do, they look completely fine.  I'm attaching a screenshot of how LR sees these images and also how they appear if I just view them in file explorer.  Any thoughts on why LR is importing these images like this?  I actually deleted them from disk then did another LR import and they all import the exact same way.

The bad files are corrupted. It's generally caused by hardware problems. Failure to write from the camera to card properly, defective cable to card reader, card reader it'self, defective port on the importing computer, etc.

If you still have the images on the card(s) try to reimport them to a different folder with a different card, card cable, port on the importing computer  or a different destination drive (hard or SSD).

Looking at the images outside of Lightroom Classic with a file viewer will not reveal the corruption because those apps are only showing you the .jpg embedded in the raw file. If the Digital Photo Express is showing you the actual raw images, It's possible that the import hardware chain had no issues in that case.

Thanks Ken.  That makes perfect sense.  Now, if I can just figure out why it happened.  Unfortunately, I no longer have the original images on the card--when I travel, each night, I copy everything on the card to 2 external USB drives then re-use the compactflash card the next day.

I do the exact same thing when I travel. In your case, just do a bunch of testing with different configurations to see if you can duplicate it.
