deselect a series of images wth keyboard in develop mode

When I am in develop mode I can hold down the shift key and using the right arrow select a series of images. How do I de-select these images and go back to a single selection using the keyboard? Simply using the left or right arrow keys only cycles you now through the selected images. How do I get out of this mode using only the keyboard.
