Question

Develop picture window flashes every when using GPU creating smart previews

When creating previews with Lightroom Classic 12.2.1, the develop window flashes every few seconds and shows the grid view for a fraction of a second. This only happens when I set Lightroom to use the graphics processor (auto or custom). I am have an Asus ProArt H7600ZX with 4K OLED display and RTX 3080 Ti with the latest studio driver. This issue is with the laptop display, I do not have an external monitor.
I have found similar issues reported, but none of the suggested fixes work.

Sounds like a bug where the preview generation temporarily blanks the GPU memory. That said, why are you generating smart previews to begin with? They are not used for anything in Classic except if your originals are offline. They just waste space. They are very rarely useful.

Would this be a bug in LRC or in the GPU driver?

I am generating smart previews to be able to access/edit pictures in a large catalog when I am travelling and the originals are offline. The space taken by previews is very small compared to my 45MP raw files. I also would like to try the option of using previews for editing, even when originals are available. This is an option under preferences that is supossed to make editing faster.

Both those functions are resource intensive and will be competing for both RAM and GPU functions.

Hopefully someone with similar hardware would check what their experience is with this task.

I am not sure I understand exactly what you are doing when you are " creating smart previews ", are you in Develop module or Library module?

Are you editing in the Develop module and the original images are not available and you are working with "Smart Previews"?

In the library module I started a task to create smart previews for al photos in a large folder that runs in the background. While the smart previews are being created, I am editing unrelated photos in the develop module and I get the flashing. If I set the the graphics processor to off, there is no o issue.

I did a simple test on 630 raw images and it took 14 minutes. No other things were done during this time. So 1.3 seconds per image.
