Did I get the wrong software?

All I need to do is to resize photos grabbed from the internet to 4x6 photos to create communicaton books for  some non verbal folks.  As an example, the Subway logo is long and thin,  I need to be able to resize to 4x6 for a communcation book.  It really doesn't have to be pretty and can have white space.  I thought Lightroom and Lightroom desktop would do it but all I seem to be able to do is crop.  That's not what I need.  I mean worst case scenario, I've blown 10 dollars.

Any instructions or is there another software without spending 60 dollars a month which is overkill for what I need to do?

Correct answer Theresa J

Lightroom can't increase the canvas size. Photoshop can do that. If you subscribed to the Photography plan you also have access to Photoshop. However, you may need neither of these.

Adobe Spark is free and should do exactly what you need. Check this out.

On Windows you have the Paint app which does everything you need and comes free with the installation. I would be very surpised if Mac doesn't come with something aimilar.

@Theresa J  I checked the Spark link for online 'Resize' and it seems it can only 'Crop' an image to the ratio (or pixel dimensions) required. It cannot add blank 'white/black/transparent' space to an image.

@Marlenebc  There is freeware for the Mac that can do what you ask- eg. GIMP  (Windows users can also use 'Faststone')

https://www.gimp.org/

This is the 'Canvas Resize' dialog in GIMP (Windows version) and a result showing original and Canvas resize result with blank space-

FYI - A subscription (US$10/month- Annual plan) to the Photography Plan would get you the 'Industry Standard' software for advanced editing. $9.99 PHOTOGRAPHY PLAN (USA)

@Rob_Cullen I beleive you can choose a template and place your image into the template. The OP reported that Spark is working for him, so I assume this is how he is doing it.

Thanks for the "template" method info.

In Lightroom Classic, it is a two step process.

  1. Crop to 4x6
  2. Export to a certain number of pixels such that the print is 4x6. (If you are printing at 300 pixels per inch, then you need to specify that the exported photo is 1200x1800 pixels)

I mean worst case scenario, I've blown 10 dollars.

Well, no, you have agreed to an annual subscription (even if you pay monthly) and there is a cash penalty if you cancel before the one year ends.

Really, all these things are information you should have obtained via searching before you bought the subscription.

Well, poop.  I'll deal if I have to but since I've only had the software for like 2 hours, I can't see Adobe wanting my first born.

I believe that you are allowed to cancel without penalty in the first 14 days, you only owe the one month payment; however since I have not done this myself, you ought to check your account at account.adobe.com and see if it can be cancelled without penaly.

What software did  you spend $10.00 on? Exact name and version.

is there another software without spending 60 dollars a month

What software, or Plan, are you referring to at $60.00/month?

I paid for my first month of lightroom but it only lets me crop.  It's 10,00 per month but won't do what I need.

I think you are a genious, Thank You!!!!  I'm a neophyte with graphics and it wants to change aspect ratios.  Under custom it gives me the opportunity to change height and width in pixels   What would a 4x6 physical picture be?
