Disappearing files

I loaded raw source files from my Canon 5D4 SD card into a folder on my external disk drive prior to lightroom import.  I then imported that folder into lightroom classic and edited all the files.  The source folder on my external disk now contains the raw source files and the corresponding .xmp files.  I then exited lightroom selecting the backup option.  The next time I went into lightroom, the folder did not appear.  The folder was still on my external disk drive along with the .xmp files.  I can re-import the folder but the .xmp files don't import.  How do I get my edits back without doing it all over again?  I did nothing different in my normal import/edit workflow.  I am a medium level user and could use some help here.

Are you talking about Lightroom (Lr icon) or Lightroom Classic (LrC icon)? What version NUMBER?

When you said "The next time I went into lightroom, the folder did not appear", this could mean that you accidentally imported the photos using COPY instead of ADD. Please click on "All Photographs" under Catalog on the left side of the Lightroom Classic library module, and see if the photos can be found there. (In LrC, search by date or search by file name).

Thanks for the replies.  I think DJ hit the nail on the head.  I loaded them with "copy" selected instead of "add".  I should have checked that but it usually defaults to "add".  Thanks a bunch.  I will try to recover the old files clicking on "all photographs.  By the way Ken, I am only using one catolog but thanks for the reply.

Do you have multiple Lightroom Classic catalogs? Your description sounds like the classic issue of opening the wrong, older catalog.
