History is only stored in the catalog, it is not stored into our sidecars/XMPs.

You surely know this but unless you enable "Save metadata changes into XMP" your DNGs will not have the edits done in LrC saved automatically in the sidecar they contain.

You can save any history step, any version/state of your photo(s) into the XMP as Snapshot so you can always go back to them...if you need to save every export automatically you can use this very useful plug-in : Snapshot on Export.

There is no way to recover history once is deleted unless you "undo" n LrC after the deletion and recover it.

If you have closed LrC after deleting history (for one or more photos) then it's gone forever...UNLESS you have a backup of the catalog done before the erase.

If you have a backup, let's say done the day before you erased history for that DNG then you can use that catalog.

.Edited for clarity

Thank you very much, the plugin is great, but I still have to do a snapshot because I often export shots only to DNG, otherwise I would have to finish every change in the photo with an atumatic snapshot export😉.

Import raw, process raw - export DNG( delete raw), import DNG, then I come back later and change , so I either have to do the export or do the snapshot myself, the history can be long so I delete it and that's where the problem comes from.

Lightroom or Lightroom Classic?

By default, Lightroom Classic doesn't store edits in the DNG file. You can turn on an option, or issue a command, to tell LrC to store the edits in the DNG file. I have no idea how Lightroom (not Classic) works on this matter.

If you have done the history reset in Lightroom Classic, go into the History Panel and select the edit just before (underneath) the reset.

Lightroom Classic

I thought that the exported DNG has the last processing saved and this is not the case, deleting the history, prevents restoration, I do not understand why this is so, after all the jpg preview in the DNG file continues to be different, I did not do update dng & preview.

Explain further ... first you said you reset the history, now you are saying you deleted the history (not the same thing). Which is it? Did you do this before or after you did the export? Can you give me an exact step-by-step sequence of your actions, in detail?

Also, did you check the history panel as I suggested?
