Question

Do previews help view smart previews if you don't have the raws?

Hi there,

I am a wedding photograph and I usually outsource the culling/selection of the wedding photos. I do this by sending the person in question the catalogue with the photos and smart previews. When I create the cataloque, however, I also create "medium" previews. Here's my question: If I send the person who is does my culling the previews in addition to the smart previews, will it help their computer go faster when culling? I can't send them all of the raws because it would take forever, but I can send them the previews file if it helps them. I hope this question makes sense.

Thanks!
Matt

Because of the differences between previews and smart previews, the answer depends on what you asked the culler to do, and what kind of previews you send.

Smart Previews let them view quickly and edit at the raw level without the originals, but are limited to 2560 pixels on the long side.

Previews can be up to 1:1 regardless of the Quality setting.

There is no relationship between Smart Previews and Previews (having one doesn’t help the other in any way).

So…

If one of the things you want them to cull on is the best focus/sharpness, then Smart Previews may be of limited use: If the originals are longer than 2560 px on the long side, Smart Previews can’t reproduce the full resolution of the original.

If they’re mostly culling on content and composition where the culler doesn’t need to be able to see every last pixel in the image, then Smart Previews should work well, but I don’t think adding other kinds of previews are going to make them any faster because Smart Previews are already downsampled and compressed.
