Question

Drag and Drop in 15.0.1 Stops Working on Windows 11 system

This is an ongoing problem that I have but it seems to have got much worse with the latest LrC update.

I am sorting through thousands of photos currently and culling duplicates, for this I need to drag and drop potential images around within the Library module.  I am not moving them to another folder or collection.

I've tried all the troubleshooting steps, several times.  Still after a very short time of doing this, I have to restart Lr and all is well again for about 20-30 minutes, rinse and repeat.  It drives you insane after a few hours.

Honestly, this isn't clear to me. Why are you dragging and dropping? Where are you dragging from? Where are you dragging to if not a folder or a collection? What is a "potential image"?

What is the problem? Exactly what happens? Please describe in detail. If there is an error message, please provide the exact unedited word-for-word error message.

And why shouldn't I drag and drop images around in my Library to have a custom sort order??   You can do that you know, since version 1.0.
I am NOT moving them to another folder or collection, so basically they exist on my HD in the same folder as is shown in LR.  Pretty clear to me.
Erm, the problem is as stated in the title "Drag and Drop in 15.0.1 Stops Working on Windows 11 system"  There isn't an error message or it would be attached.  I'm quite happily dragging images to manually sort and it's fine for averagely 20-30 minutes at a time when suddenly it just stops working and you can't drag and drop any more.  This isn't a new issue either for Windows users, it's been happening for me for several years now but has got worse since the latest update.  Whether that is Windows or Adobe, isn't clear.

My 2-bits:  Maybe this old bug has been resurrected-

https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-bugs/p-limit-of-52-reorderings-in-custom-ordered-collections-and-folders/idi-p/12250073

I would be using Star Ratings, color labels, or Flags to sort in a similar situation. And for Flags the [Refine Photos...] command can be useful.

Regards. My System: Windows-11, Lightroom-Classic 15.3, Photoshop 27.5, ACR 18.3, Lightroom 9.3, Lr-iOS 10.4.0, Bridge 16.0.3 .

Hi there! Thank you for reaching out! I'm sorry to hear about your issue. Could you please send in a screen recording of your workflow and the steps leading up to your issue? This would help us examine the problem more closely. You can share it via any public file-sharing platform.

In the meantime, you can try these fixes. See if they resolve the issue.

1) Restart your system and update everything if you haven't already. From your OS to the GPU drivers (ensure you have the latest Studio Drivers if you have an NVIDIA GPU).

2) Turn off the GPU: From Edit > Preferences> Performance > Click on Use Graphics Processor and set it to OFF. Also, click on "Purge cache" Under Camera Raw Cache Settings.

3) File > Optimize catalog > Click on Optimize.

4) Reset your LrC's preferences: Use the manual method (2) from this HelpX article - How to reset Lightroom Classic preferences

Thanks a bunch!

Thanks for responding Noel,
I have tried all the steps 1-4.  I have all my catalogs set to optimise automatically on exit as well as backup.  The preferences were reset because I had to do a clean install of Windows after a failed update totally trashed it.

I'm using the latest NVIDIA Studio driver 581.57 Released 14/10/25.

I can't really send a screenshot of my workflow.  This is a temporary catalog of 80k photos which were recovered from a HDD that failed.  This has no bearing on the problem, I also have it on my main working catalog that has original RAW images straight from the camera.
I have several folders set up as a rough sort, then I'm going through each of those and getting rid of duplicates.

The images have been keyworded so that I can use the metadata filters and reduce the number of photos I'm seeing.

Once I have the filters applied, I then start dragging and dropping to compare, gradually whittling down to keepers.  It is during these operations that the issue is happening.

If you need anything else such as system info, let me know.

Why do you have to drag and drop to compare? In the Library module, just select the images you want to compare, press C to compare them. If you decide in the compare view that one of them is not a keeper, then select that image and press X to flag this photo for deletion.
