dragging and dropping keywords in hierarchy freezes LR

Hi,

I am experiencing some problems with keyword hierarchies. Frequently when I select a keyword to move it in the hierarchy, LR freezes for some seconds, then has a bunch of keywords selected and won't let me move the one I want to.

Is there a limit to hierarchy depth? Is there an alternative way to rearrange hierarchies?

Lightroom Classic version: 7.1 [ 1148620 ]

License: Creative Cloud

Language setting: en

Operating system: Windows 10 - Home Premium Edition

Version: 10.0.16299

Application architecture: x64

System architecture: x64

Logical processor count: 6

Processor speed: 3,3 GHz

Built-in memory: 16367,0 MB

Real memory available to Lightroom: 16367,0 MB

Thanks,

Henrik

I checked and have 2157 keywords on my list with 1841 being on the top-level. As I cannot move keywords around any more, I cannot follow the suggestion and arrange keywords in hierarchies - bummer.

Maybe I will figure out something using SQL.

There are two different (inconvenient) tricks you can use for this:

1. Create a top-level keyword "A", which will appear in the keyword list at or near the top.  Drag all the "a" keywords to "A". Then repeat for "B", "C", etc.   (Alternatively, you could use "_a-d", "_e-h", etc. to reduce the number of top-level keywords.)  Now collapse all of those top-level keywords and expand just one at a time as you start reorganizing into a "real" hierarchy.

2. You can temporarily reduce the number of keywords shown in the Keyword List panel as you reorganize.  Suppose you want to move "Vermont" under the top-level "Places" keyword.  Type "places vermont" in the Keyword List panel's search box:

That will restrict the keywords shown to just those containing the strings "places" or "vermont" (and any ancestor keywords containing those keywords).  Since less than 1500 keywords are being displayed, you can then drag "vermont" under "places".

The 'lockup when moving keywords' problem has existed in Lightroom since the very beginning, AND it still exists even today in version 14.0.1 !!!!!  I run into it all the time!

For some reason, this bug, and SO many others in Lightroom, has simply been ignored by Adobe.  Adobe is good about taking your money, but terrible when it comes to fixing bugs.  Why is that?

You’ve posted to an ancient thread. It is highly unlikely that the issue described in this thread, though not impossible, is the same one you are currently experiencing. Rather than resurrect an old thread that is seemingly similar, you are better off posting to a new thread with fresh, complete information, including system information, a complete description of the problem, and step-by-step instructions for reproduction.

If the issue is the same, we will merge you back into the appropriate location.

Thank you!

Well to start with I think you have a CPU problem. The Logical Processor count on your system is 6. I don't know of any CPU that has 3 physical CPUs on one chip.

Could be I guess but I've never heard of one.

Six logical processors does seem unique.

Another thought: Do you have more than about 1500 keywords? LR on Windows has a very long-standing bug with large numbers of keywords.  See this article for workarounds: Lightroom doesn't display all keywords

I learned something new: Some AMD processors have 3 "modules" with 2 threads per module, which Windows reports as 3 physical cores with 6 logical processors. Bulldozer (microarchitecture) - Wikipedia
