Duplicate files <not> ignored

Cuurious why LR 12.5 would happily import >1,000 files that were already in a catalog. You can see in this picture that the file I highlighted, which is on my CF card, is already in a catalog and in a folder on my drive. Any idea how to <actually> ignore duplcates? Thanks for any thoughts.

How much time did you give LrC while in import to parse thru the images and determine duplicates? Talking minutes as opposed to seconds. 1000 images at one import is a bit much, and might slow things down. I assume you do not normally have a thousand old images on a card.

Thanks for your note. I just checked, and it has now been almost 2 hours
and LR has not changed what it intends to import. I just got back from an
extensive trip and was checking to see if I had already downloaded all my
cards. With this first one, it wanted to reimport 1800 pix that were
already on the drive. Interestingly, there are almost 3000 pix on that card
and it narrowed that down to 1800. So I checked a few dozen randomly and
sure enough, they are already right on my hard drive where they belong.
This is a mystery, to me at least.
