Question

Easiest backup of LR Catalog

My workflow:

Shoot images and transfer to LR CC on my Ipad Pro. Edit images on Ipad. Sync with LR Classic on my desktop.

My Question:

I need clarification on how to best backup photos, both edited & unedited, from LR Classic and then remove them from my Ipad & Cloud Storage to free up that space again. I want to make copies on External HD's and keep them that way for Past years, keeping only the most recent images on in the Lightroom Ecosystem.

What's the best, easiest, and most seamless way of doing this?

Thanks!

  1. You make backups of the LrC catalog file to a different disk than the original, using the built-in LrC backup feature.
  2. For LrC, you make backups of all of your original photos, preferably using automated backup software, to a different disk than the original.

There is no way to do partial backups of a catalog, any backup of the catalog is a backup of the ENTIRE catalog.

... keeping only the most recent images on in the Lightroom Ecosystem.

This is unrelated to backups, and as far as I know there is no automated method in LrC of just keeping the most recent images in the Lightroom ecosystem. You would have to manually select which images to be deleted from the Lightroom ecosystem, and manually select which new images to add.

I hope you already know that LrC does not send your full size images to the cloud, it sends reduced size images, which would not really be considered backups.
