Question

Export no longer includes photo's proprietary metadata

When I export a file to jpg with imaging sizing such as 1920 x 1440 px and select include all metadata selected, the resulting file seems not to include some of the brand’s proprietary metadata.  I only look at a couple of things, so I don’t know if it is all or just some items.

When I export the original, the metadata is available.

When I resize in Apple’s Preview, the resulting file also is missing the proprietary metadata.

Classic Lightroom  v 15.3.1

IOS Tahoe 26.5.1 (released last week)

Pentax K3-iii

Will all proprietary data be available in future releases?

@TanyaThree Could Lightroom just copy the MakerNotes verbatim to the exported file’s metadata, with no expectation of accessing that metadata in Lightroom’s Metadata panel?

The problem, as I’ve understood from posts by Exiftool’s developer, is that some manufacturers’ MakerNotes use absolute file offsets, while others use offsets relative to the beginning of MakerNotes.  The latter can be blindly copied anywhere, while the former requires the offsets to be patched, which can be tricky, since the format is undocumented.

My mistake. There is no change in behavior for my Pentax K3-iii images. Generally, there is a lot of camera metadata that’s left out when using Lightroom’s export (other than for “Original”).

The proprietary metadata is generally stored in the MakerNotes section of the metadata.  LR has never made any attempt to copy the MakerNotes into exported files (unless you’ve selected the format Original). While it’s technically possible to copy MakerNotes correctly (as Exiftool demonstrates), it involves a lot of proprietary knowledge about the internal representation of MakerNotes.

Could Lightroom just copy the MakerNotes verbatim to the exported file’s metadata, with no expectation of accessing that metadata in Lightroom’s Metadata panel? I could imagine that keeping all info together would be useful for the content credentials program and integrating different Adobe programs and other programs in the future.

I looked at one Pentax file using EXIFTool Reader and metadata space usage upon resizing and export decreased from 50KB to 15KB. So I’m not talking about a lot of disk space.

You have answered my question, thank you.

    brand’s proprietary metadata

Can you give list some of the specific fields to which you’re referring? And which tool are you using to examine the metadata in the exported JPEG?

I can give you likely answers about this, but to reduce confusion, it would be better to have specifics first.

I’m using the EXIFTool Reader and EXITTool Reader Pro apps on the Mac to check.

Forgot an import piece of information! As of last week before I updated to Tahoe 26.5.1, the metadata was being transferred when resizing photos last week (in Lightroom Classic’s export and also in Preview resize and then export). So something changed with the Apple update and now the “All metadata” option in export is no longer completely true.
