I am currently using LightRoom Classic and am having memory problem because it uses space on the laptop hard drive.... I have an external drive and would like to know how to connect it in a way that Light Room uses the external drive rather than the computer hard drive for its catalogue....can I simply drag and drop the current Light Room cataloue onto the external drive??? I am using a Macbook Air laptop

My suggestion would be to leave the catalog on the Mac hard drive, but move all of the images to the external hard drive. Probably the best option would be to copy all of the folders to the external hard drive and then update the folder location and point Lightroom to the folders on the external hard drive. Then, after Lightroom has been oriented to the images on the external hard drive and then the images on the Mac hard drive could be deleted. If all your images are organized within one master image folder, all you have to do is point Lightroom to the master image folder on the external hard drive, and everything is done. Then the images on the Mac hard drive can be removed.

Can you give me some step by step instructions to help me do this?

To move the photos to a different disk, please follow these instructions (scroll down to "Part 2 — Updating Folder Location") http://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_find_folder/find-folder.htm

If you want to move the catalog file to an external drive, then you can move it using your operating system to a newly created empty folder on the external drive, and then double-click on it to open it.\

Now, maybe you would want to move the photos to the external drive ... they take up much more space than the catalog file. It's a somewhat different procedure. Let us know.
