external hard drive recommendation

Hello,

I recently purchased a new iMac (desktop) and am looking to buy a new ehd to trasnfer my photos from the old one that does not use the latest usb tech.  However, I am not sure if I need a SSD external or if I can save some cash and go with a non-SSD external.
