Face recognition slow - wheel spins forever

I have 400,000 pictures on an external USB 3 connected drive.  Facial recognition is going at a snail's pace.  It looks like it will take weeks.  If I switch to people view, I get the wheel and can do nothing else.  I have an imac with 3.4 ghz intel core i7 with 24 GB of ram.  Should this be happening?

Do you have install the latest version of Lightroom?

Do you have tried to deactivate the GPU support?

Open Lightroom, goto Edit menu > Preferences > Perfomance > Uncheck GPU, restart Lightroom.

A further bottleneck is that you use an external hard drive. It would be better to work on an internal hard disk.
