Failed Tethering - LrC v15.1 - Canon R6 mkiii - TetherProUSB-C Gen2 cable

I am SO ANNOYED at why This happens EVERY YEAR.  I have spent well over $100 on various USB-C Cables, some work for a bit some don't.  The ones that worked well for a while were designed for the Oculus Headset, so they were high speed.  Most Generic USB-C v3.1 / v3.2 cables will detect the camera on your computer, but then NOT WORK with Lightroom classic.

My Setup #1 - MacBook M1 Pro (16gb / 1tb), Running Tahoe v26.0.1

LrC v15.1 Camera RAW v18.1

Cable #1 USB v3.1 designed for Oculus Headset

- This worked Briefly with my Canon R6 mkii (mark 2), then fails at random under LrC

- Sketch... LrC Loaded Tether, but stated "No Camera Detected" Won't See my Canon R6 mkiii (mark 3) under LrC

In Both Cases The OS sees the Camera.

Cable #2 Tether Tools TetherPro USB-C Gen 2 Cable for USB-C v3.2

- BOTH Cameras Seen by the OS, but Fail to Load in Lightroom Classic under Tethering

- Sketch again, LrC Loaded Tether, but stated "No Camera Detected" Won't See my Canon R6 mkiii (mark 3) under LrC

- Multiple ports were tried and the same thing happened

What is REALLY ANNOYING is I have been through this with EVERY R6 series Camera I have owned from the Original to the Mark 3.  Adobe will FIX things for a while, then the next release of LrC comes out and it breaks again.   WHO DOES YOUR QUALITY CONTROL TESTING???

My Setup #2 iMac 27" 3.8GHz 8-Core i9 (64gb/multiple Drives)

LrC v15.1 Camera RAW v18.1

Cable #1 Tether Tools TetherPro USB-C Gen 2 Cable for USB-C v3.2

- Sketch... LrC Loaded Tether, but stated "No Camera Detected" Won't See my Canon R6 mkiii (mark 3) under LrC

- NIETHER Canon R6 mkii or mkiii are detected by the OS or LrC

This does not invalidate the cable, as it is new and IS SEEN by the Newer M1 Pro MacBook and it would be USED by the the Laptop vs the Desktop.  The MacBook is far better for traveling to studios than the Desktop.

PROCEDURE

1) Freshely booted computer

2) USB-C cable plugged into Computer & Camera

3) Lightroom Classic Launched

4) Camera turned on (often detected by MacBook in the OS)

5) Tether started in LrC

OTHER TESTS - DONE

- MacBook M1 Pro

- Evoto v6.1.0-500 (update, again) But It detected the camera with the TetherTool Pro v3.2 cable and worked FLAWLESSLY

- Capture One v16.7.2.32 (downloaded a trail, NEVER having USED IT before) But It detected the camera with the TetherTool Pro v3.2 cable and worked FLAWLESSLY

MY STATEMENT TO ADOBE TEAM

1) Adobe needs to TEST & Recommend Cables that will work

2) Various Cameras NEED to be tested, especially the most modern Mirrorless

3) A BETTER Communications set up to send Error or Non WORKING Data from WITHIN Lightroom Classic Back to Adobe that would convey all of our system settings, what is being seen by LrC and an disclosure box to further describe the issues being had.

HERE IS THE ICING and STAB that is really making Adobe Loose Marketshare.  When we MUST Use Other Tools / Software to get their work accomplished (Evoto & Capture One) to get our work accomplished this is frustrating, in both time consumed as well as extra money spent on another product (solution).

What is really and truly annoying, is installing Evoto or Capture One on my laptop was EASY and I have NEVER Used Tethering before on Evoto, but do have a plan.  I have NEVER USED Capture One before and it installed EASY and It connected to my R6 mkiii INSTANTLY and I had my first image in the computer in under 7 minutes from Download, Install and Configure.

Adobe, you need to TRY HARDER with your Product deveolpment, Quality Testing and have a Better feedback connection to help resolve these issues faster.  Posting in the community and waiting MONTHS for a reply is NOT QUALITY CUSTOMER SERVICE.

Very frustrated.  Hoping Adobe will fix.
I am actually happy using Canon EOS Utility3… but LigthRoomClassic BLOCKS Usb communication even when tethering is not enabled.  You need to start EOSUtil3 BEFORE starting LRC..
LRC should NOT  be grabbing resources it is not currently using.  If it is using USB… for what!?!?!?  Seems really sketchy, or just a terribly bug-ridden implementation.

Could not agree more. I went as far as bring the R6 Mark3 to b&H photo in Manhattan. 6 techs along with a Canon rep could not get it to work. I also brought  a lap top that tethered effectively with other canon camera via LRC.  A disaster. Months and they still have not fixed it.  I shoot tethers so I returned the Mark3 and purchased the Mark2.

The Mark 2 isn't an guarantee either... I used it for several hours at an event, then suddenly... It just stopped working.

NO WARNING, it just stopped transferring images from the camera.

- Restarted everything, didn't work

- Changed cables to another known working, didn't work

after 10min of trying to troubleshoot, I just had to keep shooting... I went through 450 people in 2 days and the line never dropped below 40 people and I had to turn people away at the end of the scheduled booked time.   So many wanted to see their headshots as that was why they were inline... they saw the laptop showing what I was doing and I got the BEST COMPLIMENTs.... Until Adobe Lightroom just STOPPED WORKING with NO WARNING.

So I am happy for you, IF your Mark 2 works... but as I posted in my inital post... Every year (end or begining) Adobe makes changes and its stops working... this has been my experience for 2024, 2025 and now 2026.  Does it ever work again.. sometimes usually about 1/2 way through the year it just starts working again.

Just one note, I've had the best luck overall using Apple-branded Thunderbolt cables. They are pricey but work perfrctly with both USB-C and Thunderbolt data connections.

I also spent a lot on those Apple branded cables from the Apple Mall Store and while my M1 MacBook Pro OS sees BOTH Cameras,  Again its LrC that Failes to work.

If you review https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/tethered-camera-support.html you will find that the R6 III is not yet supported.

If you read the whole post this isn't Just the R6 mkiii(3), it also affects the Mark ii (2)

FYI, Adobe’s AI helper states the R6III is supported but that the documentation is out of date and may need to be corrected.  I don’t trust AI for anything, but it is certainly frustrating that Adobe has no reliably factual concrete information on the subject.
