Question

"File access denied"

Hi - I was recently doing a bunch of editing, catalog management (ie deleting files) in Lightroom Classic (rel 13.1) with Windows 11 when I noticed when I looked at an image in the develop module it had a banner pop up saying "File access was denied" and couldn't be edited but the actual file is there.  There appears to be no common theme in why the image becomes unavailable.  It happens with all formats (ie .jpg, CR2, DNG etc).  In the Library module, the image is visible in grid mode  but not in Loupe/full screen mode.  It is more prevalent with older images and virtually non-existant in images.

I can't remember anything out of the ordinary I did to cause this problem but obviously something happened 😞

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Peter

What exactly did you do when you say catalog management?

Did you move and/or delete photos? Did you do it from within LrC or in Explorer?

If you have metadata failures, that usually means the photo has changed (i.e. manipulated) by something else than LrC.

Where are the files located? Does LrC and the current user have  full access (read/write) to these folders?

Please post the first 3 blocks (approx. 55 lines) from the system information in the help menu.

I was just doing some editing as well as moving and deleting images - all through LR.  The files are located on my S: drive which has been mirrored to Lightroom - something I've been using this config for over 5 yrs. I haven't changed any permissions (that I'm aware of).

I'm away from my PC for a few days over Christmas but I'll post the system info when I get back

thanks

Peter

In library, do you see an exclamation mark on the photos in grid view?

Do you see questions marks on the folders in the folder panel?

This probably helps: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/help/locate-missing-photos.html

After many restarts and other actions, the missing photo seem to be showing up.  I do however see the exclamation mark on the top of the thumbnails in grid view.  When I click on it there is a window offering me the option of importing the settings from disk or retrying Medadata export.  Either option will make the "!" go away.  Any suggestions on how to make it go away moving forward?  I can go to "All Photographs" in the Catalog box, select all photos and then click on one photo's "!" and all photos will have the "!" removed.  Will that resolve it moving forward?

Thanks

Peter
