I have over a 100,000 files in a parent folder...most of them are also in a subfolder, but many are only in the parent folder...how to I tell which ones are not in a subfolder?

There is a checkbox option "Show Photos in Subfolders" in the Library menu - also accessible on the Add dropdown menu at the top of the Folders panel.

When this option is un-checked, only the direct contents of a given folder are shown - you won't also see the contents of its subfolders.
