Question

Fix for external edits not showing in the develop module?

When I edit a file in Silver Efex, on return to Lightroom, the file shows up as expected in the Library module, but when I switch to develop, the edits aren't visible - the original unedited TIFF that got sent to Silver Efex is displayed. This persists until I quit and reopen Lightroom. This happens whether I save the files in destructive or non-destructive (edited) versions out of Silver Efex.

Looking around today, I found this exchange from 5 years ago:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-discussions/develop-adjustments-not-reflected-in-develop-module/m-p/9079269

In that discussion, @JP Hess suggested "Then try right clicking on the file and choosing Metadata->Read metadata from file." That does work perfectly - suddenly my edits show up, which is a huge improvement.

However, I'm wondering if there's an actual fix for the problem, instead of this better-but-still-cumbersome workaround.

(Most recent versions of LR, MacOS, Silver Efex, etc etc)

When you are working with Lightroom Classic, which is a non destructive application, it never makes changes to your original image files, all the work and edits you do in LrC is stored in the Lightroom Catalog file.

However there is an option to write info to the file, which allow you to share info to other applications, mainly Bridge and ACR.

If you make edits or other changes with another application outside of Lightroom there is no option to automatically apply those in LrC. That requires a manual intervention like "Read metadata from the file.

The point here is that Lightroom is displaying the edits in the Library module without any intervention; therefore it should show the edits in the Develop module without any intervention. And in fact that's what used to happen.

If that is the case LrC is likely displaying a preview file in the Library Module.

The only time LrC will read data from an xmp file is at initial import. If there are subsequent edits applied by Adobe applications Bridge / Camera Raw or third party applications that is addressed by reading info from the file a manual process.
