For some images on an SD card (but not others) the EXIF data does not get transferred on importing

I shoot RAW format with a Z8 and am running LrC 13.5.1. Starting out-of-the-blue with no obvious changes from before, some, but not all, of the images imported do not have EXIF data. The odd images say that the metadata "have been changed" and show only the pixel dimensions of the image. This causes lots of problems to have incomplete EXIF data. Why some images and not the adjacent image I have no clue and have seen no pattern. Anyone else run into this or have suggestions for sorting it out? Thanks

thanks for the pointer. This looks like the issue I am finding. I thought
it was my imagination, but I did see the EXIF data disappear on hovering
over an image as described in that conversation.
