So you are working with importing or at least creating previews for a huge number of photos? Just importing (with previews) a few hundred can be slow. While trying to do that in  parallel can help, but something like a thousand or more??

Have yo tried not creating previews at import, allowing the import to finish, then select say less than 1000, and create the previews (you stated after 1000 it fails)

That ASUS Laptop probably came with a ASUS application called MyASUS installed.

per ASUS this app Description :
"MyASUS is your central hub for ASUS software, with apps designed to help you maintain your system, optimize your PC's performance, and contact ASUS for after-sales service and support. You can also access AppDeals for popular app downloads and exclusive offers."

Have you used it to check for and acquire driver updates? And no, MS updates may or may not help.
