Grayish gradient and adjustment tools

Hope anybody can help me with this annoying problem: As you see at the screenshot, I have a problem in the main window when I use the gradient tool. Also applies to the Adjustment Brush Tool. When I'm using those tools, the area only gets gray and darker, while in the left smal window you actually see what happens in real time. But when you leave the Gradient tool, the change is updated and then you see what has actually happened. Does anybody have a solution?

Press Shift + O to cycle between the mask overlay colours (Black, White, Green and Red)

Press O to hide/show the overlay

You can also use the hide/show option directly below the photo in the toolbar.
