Hard drive permissions issue

I haven't used lightroom classic for quite a long time. Last time I did it was LR classic CC. Now it has been updated to just LR classic. I have a lot of images saved on an external hard drive but when I connect it now and try to open LR classic I get the following message:

"The Lightroom catalog cannot be used because the parent folder “/Volumes/LaCie Main/Lightroom” does not allow files to be created within it.

Please either fix the folder permissions before continuing or choose a different catalog."

I don't know how I would do that ? Can someone advise. It may be very simple for those folks who juggle these things a lot but I am nervous of losing my images by doing something dumb. Thanks.

Doing this got me past the original error message. However, it then tells me the catalog needs to be upgraded to work with the newer version of Lightroom Classic.
Unfortunately after a few seconds of starting this I get a new error:

“ Lightroom encountered problems trying to upgrade the format of the catalog file and can’t use this catalog in this version of Lightroom.”

There is a link to an Adobe tech note but it didn’t help.

Is there any access to live help these days. Happy to pay but not sure there is any support service with live humans any more 😞

The catalog might be corrupt.

Do you have a backup of that catalog?
