Help! Lightroom Classic cannot import any video

Lightroom will no longer import any video. Adobe support have not been able to help me despite 7 hours on the phone with the over several days.

I am desperately hoping one of you very smart people will be able to help me.

I started getting the following error a couple of days ago whenever I tried to import video into Lightroom.

"An unknown error has occurred while reading the video file. Connecting to Dynamic Link server failed. (10)"

I have tried importing a variety of the following file types. None will work.

.mp4 files from a GoPro Hero 6 (2.7k)

.mov files from an iPhone (4k)

.mov files from a DJI Phantom 4 Pro (4k)

All previously imported without any problems. All photo file types still import without any problems at all.

I am running a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015)

High Sierra V 10.13.6

Lightroom Classic v 8.1

Adobe support have tried the following:

Creating a new catalog and importing the files

Importing the files from a card reader

Importing the files from my computer's hard drive

Importing the files from an external hard drive

Adding the files to the catalog

Uninstalling Lightroom and reinstalling it

Logging into my computer as a new admin user and installing a "clean copy" of Lightroom

Increasing the video cache to 25GB

Cleared the video cache (which I was not able to do, it kept getting stuck. I eventually cleared it by wiping my entire computer. see below).

Adobe changed a number of settings which I did not quite understand.

Adobe also tried to following fix, which is on a number of forums. It worked once, but a couple of imports later, the same error message appeared.

Quit LR

From the Finder type: (CMD-SHIFT_G) OR from GO Menu

Enter path: ~/Library/Preferences/Adobe/

Rename the following folders with a .old OR delete the directory

dynamiclinkmediaserver

dynamiclinkmanager

DyanmicLinkMediaServer

Open LR and Import Video files as usual.

I also took the extreme measure today of wiping my entire Mac and reinstalling a new version of High Sierra without any other programs of preferences. I then downloaded Lightroom. It was essentially a clean, brand new laptop with a fresh copy of the latest Lightroom loaded. I did not import my old catalog. I started a brand new one. I did not load any other programs. I did not load any other adobe programs. I got the same error message straight away.

I am deeply frustrated and hoping someone out there can help.

Thanks in advance.

I also have this problem.  I'm on Mac OS Mojave and Lightroom 8.3.  There is a bug using video files in Lightroom Classic. Just got off chat with agent and he said,

"Actually we have seen some issue with the videos with these version so we

suggest to use the previous version for 2015 but then again we have a

issue that lightroom 2015 will not work with mac 10.15 and we are still

working on the issue with the new version and for now what I will

suggest you is to use 2015 and as we find a resolution we will get back

to you on the E-mail"

So his suggestion is that I use LR 2015 (which won't be compatible with the next version of Mac OS).  Very unhelpful.

Here is my copy of the chat:

Hello, I'll be happy to assist you and Videos won't import or play in lightroom classic and may I know the version of Lightroom classic you are using?

8.3.1

Koushtav

Thank you and may I know the error message when you try to import videos?

something about dynamic link server

Koushtav

Okay I understand and may I know the operating system you are using?

an unknown error has occurred while reading the video file. Connecting to dynamic link server failed (1)

I'm on mac os 10.14.5

Koushtav

Thank you for the information.

Is it OK if I access your computer remotely to assist you with your issue? If yes, please close your personal files and folders. Let me know when you're ready to start the remote session.

Thank you and let me fix it.

Now please try to import video and check

I get the same error

Koushtav

May I know the location of videos are you importing them from external drive or internal drive?

They are on the internal drive in a folder on the desktop

Koushtav

Try with some other video files and let me see if we get same error or not.

Okay so same error

I am creating a new catalog and I will check in that catalog.

Please try to import here and check

Please try to import here and check

I lost the remote session and please now try to import and check is that working or not.

I still get the same error message

Koushtav

Okay please open the Adobe creative cloud and please install the lightroom version 2015 and then check is the videos importing there or not

I'm confused. I already have the latest version of Lightroom Classic installed. Are you asking me to uninstall and reinstall it?

Koushtav

No just install the previous version of lightroom and we will check in that videos are importing in that or not.

I successfully imported a video in lightroom version 2015

Koushtav

Okay so it is working with that version but the latest version is not supporting so this is not working, let me know have you added any third part presets, brushes or plug in to latest version of the lightroom?

I have the nik collection of plugins.

Koushtav

Okay I understand, please back it up and we need to uninstall and re-install and check if that works or not.

I've backed it up. So, I should uninstall and reinstall lightroom classic?

Koushtav

Yes

Is that working now?

I'm still installing Lightroom classic

I still can't import videos. I get the same error message

Koushtav

Okay I understand so need to use the 2015 for videos as there is a compatibility issue

So, you're telling me that lightroom classic doesn't support videos? And I have to use a previous version?

Koushtav

Yes actually new version is having issue and you can also try with 8.2 and check

Is this something that will be fixed? Lightroom 2015 won't work on the next version of Mac OS.

Koushtav

Actually we have seen some issue with the videos with these version so we suggest to use the previous version for 2015 but then again we have a issue that lightroom 2015 will not work with mac 10.15 and we are still working on the issue with the new version and for now what I will suggest you is to use 2015 and as we find a resolution we will get back to you on the E-mail

Is that it? Because this link https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/video-support-lightroom.html says that video is supported?

Koushtav

We know it is supported but with the 8.3.1 it is having issue so we are working with this issue and in your case also we will work and for now you can use the previous version of lightroom to import videos and as soon as we fix a fix for this issue we will E-mail you the same with the resolution.

I've been importing GoPro videos over last couple of weeks and then last week LR borked and refused to import files one day.
Did another import this week LR imported files fine into various date folders as I wanted. I renamed them as pairs with the associated .WAV files that LR always ignores using Bridge. Did a sync folder to get LR to update with new file names and now LR suddenly does not recognise them. Nor would it import some other older GoPro files I tried importing.

Well, I probably misunderstand the error message, that server part makes me think Internet, makes me think Connectivity.

This link (at bottom)  is more involved than just Lightroom, talks of other Adobe products, but does talk about Dynamic Link.

One issue could be version of Adobe Creative Cloud

Fixing Dynamic Link - YouTube

warning, very long video, did not go thru whole thing.

By the way, can you now purge the video cache? If not, you probably have an user account permission issue.

I have the same problem. Tried all the so-called solutions I found in the forum, no effect. Latest version of Lightroom Classic on a Macbook Pro running 10.12.6.

I mean, WTF? This issue is by no means new, and it seems to affect many of us. Come one, Adobe, do something. You're charging us enough for your products.

One possibility that I do not see listed, or I overlooked that they (Adobe) did try.

Have you tried the following

1. Log out of the MAC, log back in as a local administrator, and see what happens.

2.  Create a new computer account on the MAC, login as that new user, see what happens.
