Question

Help with files merging into one folder

Background: I was in the middle of restoring a Lightroom Classic catalog after a drive recovery. During the process, two folders got merged, let’s call them “June” and “July”.  Both folders exist correctly on my external drive.

Current situation in Lightroom Classic 13.3:

  • Only the June folder appears in the Folders panel
  • It shows 1212 photos total — approximately 300 June images and 900 July images
  • All images appear normal (no question marks or error badges), but they do have a white square that says Smart Preview.
  • All images have edits I need to preserve
  • When I click "Show in Explorer" on a July image, it correctly shows the file in the July folder on disk
  • But the metadata panel shows the June folder as the location
  • When I try to drag July images to a different folder in LR, it says "All files selected are missing. No files can be moved."

What I've already tried:

  • Adding the July folder via Add Folder — resulted in 900 duplicate catalog entries, so I deleted the folder

What I need:
A safe way to relink the ~900 July images to the correct July folder on disk, without losing edits, and without affecting the ~300 June images that are correctly linked.

Thanks in advance!

All images appear normal (no question marks or error badges), but they do have a white square that says Smart Preview.

If you have smart previews, then you will not see error badges when images are missing. The white rectangle indicates that only a smart preview is available to Lightroom however, so you could consider this as the alternative error badge, indicating that the original image is missing.

You should be able to reconnect one of the ‘July’ images and use the option to ‘find nearby images’ to reconnect the rest of them:

That is what displays when I single-click on the white square. Should I go ahead and try “locate”?

Yes, locate the file and check the option to do the same for nearby missing photos.

“Add folder” doesn’t seem to me to be the proper approach.

Please show us screen captures of the Library Module so we can see the problem you described. We need to see the ENTIRE Library Module window, do not chop anything off. Also please show us another screen capture(s) of these two folders as they appear in Windows Explorer or Mac Finder.

Is there some reason why you are not using the current version of Lightroom Classic which is version 15.4?

I’m not sure if this is what you want with the Library Module:

    Here is File Explorer:

I haven’t updated LR because I’ve been deep in a huge restoration project (16 TB of photos were stolen from me and I had to download everything from Backblaze - I am completed that and now I am re-linking the folders).
