Question

Hi. My Lightroom 5 has suddenly started crashing. What is the best option to problem solve?

Hello. I'd be grateful for someone's help!

I have LR 5 on a new spec Mac. I've never ever had a problem and haven't changed anything recently. Everything is up to date and there is plenty of storage and memory. LR keeps suddenly crashing, especially when sorting / viewing the catalogues. I have also noticed that when I edit a photo in LR I sometimes now get an exclamation mark on it and it says it has been edited in another programme and do I want to overwrite settings, when it has never been out of LR.

The Adobe website shows lots of options to look at to fix this, including a reset to factory settings. But that seems to come with all sorts of resetting risks I don't understand, so not sure if I should try it unless it is definitely the solution?

Thank you.

Thank You for the fast reply!

I will switch, however using cloud may be complicated.

I saw two options for the LR Classic: try option and also a BUY option. Which one would be easy to follow?

I don't even know what you are talking about when you say "using the cloud may be complicated". Lightroom Classic CC is a desktop application, as it always has been, it does not run in "the cloud", although there is a feature to share your photos with the cloud, it is optional and many people never turn on this option.

There's no difference in "easy to follow".

The "try" option gives you 7-days of use of Lightroom Classic CC and then you have to subscribe, or stop using Lightroom Classic CC.

Do you get an error message? If so, please quote the exact error message. Also, you say:

LR keeps suddenly crashing, especially when sorting / viewing the catalogues.

I assume that this means the crashes happen in the Library Module. Is that correct?

If you would be so kind, also state your exact operating system.

Hello!

Thank you so much for your response.

I am on a Mac High Sierra v 10.12.2 (17C88) Retina %K.

When it crashes it just all shuts down and I get a huge error message 0 which I don't currently have a copy of. It then asks me to re-open and then opens in a much earlier catalogue, but my work is not lost. I can't recall, but it is not always in Library.

If I get another crash, I'll screen shot the messages.

Thank you so much.

High Sierra and Lightroom 5 do not always work well together.

Here is a partial list of known problems of using Lightroom 5 with High Sierra (and probably there are other problems that haven't been added to the list).

I would suggest that you either downgrade your operating system to Sierra, or upgrade (pay money) your Lightroom to either 6.14 or Lightroom Classic CC.
