How can I restore true pixel-by-pixel smooth scrolling in Lightroom Classic with a Logitech MX Master 4?
Something really strange happened yesterday, and I haven’t been able to reproduce it since.
My hardware and software:
- Windows 11
- Logitech MX Master 4 with the MagSpeed scroll wheel
- Logi Options+
- Lightroom Classic
- Two monitors
Normally, the Grid view in Lightroom Classic’s Library module scrolls by entire rows of photos. Instead of moving smoothly, it jumps from one row to the next. This happens regardless of whether I have “Scroll by Row” enabled or disabled.
Yesterday, however, Lightroom suddenly started scrolling completely smoothly. The grid moved smoothly, literally pixel by pixel, without jumping between rows. It behaved like true high-resolution scrolling or touchpad scrolling. It worked perfectly.
I didn’t knowingly change any settings. After restarting my computer, everything went back to the usual row-by-row scrolling, and I haven’t been able to get the smooth scrolling back.
Enabling and disabling Smooth Scrolling and SmartShift, as well as switching between the ratchet and free-spin wheel modes in Logi Options+, doesn’t allow me to reproduce it. I used the third-party SmoothScroll app for several years because I hate the way windows or text seem to teleport when scrolling, but it never worked properly in Lightroom or Photoshop.
I also noticed another strange behavior in Photoshop that may be related.
When the Photoshop window is active, holding Alt and using the mouse wheel causes it to zoom in and out in clear, fixed steps. The Smooth Scrolling setting in Logi Options+ makes no difference here.
However, if I activate another application on my second monitor and then move the cursor over the inactive Photoshop window without clicking it, holding Alt and scrolling the mouse wheel gives me incredibly smooth, continuous zooming in and out. As soon as I click Photoshop and make its window active again, the zoom immediately returns to fixed steps.
I found an older thread on the Adobe forum from more than six years ago describing an almost identical difference between active and inactive Lightroom Classic windows:
This makes me wonder whether Windows or Logi Options+ sends a different kind of high-resolution scrolling signal to inactive windows, while Lightroom and Photoshop replace it with their own stepped scrolling when their windows are active.
Has anyone managed to get truly smooth Grid view scrolling in Lightroom Classic using an MX Master mouse?
Is there a way to force Lightroom and Photoshop to use the same smooth scrolling that works when their windows are inactive?
Could a recent Logi Options+ update have temporarily enabled some new feature, or was it simply an exceptionally lucky driver glitch?
