How can I use LR 6 stand alone on two PCs? No answer in FAQ

Hi, sorry if I'm in the wrong forum. It seems Adobe just want to push Lightroom CC and there is no support or forum section for LR 6.

Basically Im a hobbyist and have no need for CC and monthly fees. I bought version 6 as it allowed me to use a midi device for editing photos. If you have not tried it I would deffo suggest you look it up.

Anyway I bought LR6 at a reduced price as I had previously bought 5. It says I can use it on two computers but not at the same time which I understand. My problem is my home PC is Windows 8.1 and the new laptop I bought is Windows 10. I tried installing it onto my laptop and it said not supported for this OS. I then went back on my home PC and 6 had been deactivated! I had to reinstall and enter my key again so I now have my LR6 on the home PC again.

Can you advise me how I can get the software onto my new laptop as the whole idea was to allow me to work away from home. I have just subscribed to a cloud service too just for this way of editing.

If I have to purchase a second version (grrr) am I able to buy it at the reduced rate with me already having bought a copy.

Any advice or links you can give would be much appreciated. Thanking you in advance.

    Correct answer John Waller

Im stumped now how I can progress without having the LR5 key or the program even on my computer.

You don't need to have LR5 installed but you definitely DO need your LR5 serial number to successfully complete the installation of LR6..

You are using an upgrade LR6 serial number. That will only be accepted if you also enter your LR5 serial number as well. It's one of the catches of using upgrade software. You always need an earlier version serial number to accompany the upgrade serial number.

Do you have any idea where you might have stored the LR5 serial number? If LR5 is still installed on your home PC then you can recover it using Belarc

PROBLEM FIXED!!! A huge thank you to John Waller. The link to Belarc Advisor gave me the LR5 licence key I could not find. Even though the program had been removed off my computer the key was still in the registry.

I was struggling as LR5 had not been registered to my Adobe Account so they had no record of it.

Thank you so much everyone, the advice given was amazing. I hope I can come back and repay the favour at a later date.

    Many thanks

    UPDATE

Ok thank you for your helpful replies. I checked and my computer is 64 bit so that's OK. I downloaded 6 onto my pen drive and reinstalled it onto the new windows 10 laptop for the second time. This time I made sure LR6 was not running on my home PC, possibly that was the reason why last time I don't know for sure.

Everything seemed OK with the instal but when I entered the key which I got from my Adobe products a message came up saying

"Serial Number you provided is valid, but a qualifying product could not be found on this computer."

Im presuming its LR 5.whatever as its never been on this new laptop. I would have thought the key would be fine, especially as Adobe won't sell you the software or should I say upgrade if I did not have a valid version of 5. I have since deleted LR5 off my PC to gain space. I purchased LR5 from a shop ages ago and can't find the case with the key on so it is not on my Adobe account. I wouldn't mind but I only upgraded to LR6 so the Behringer midi device I used for editing worked!

So my problem now is authorising the installed software. I have allowed the instal as a trial for now.

Thank you for all your help so far but Im stumped now how I can progress without having the LR5 key or the program even on my computer.

    Thoughts appreciated

    Many thanks

If you purchased LR 6  as an upgrade from an earlier version of Lightroom, then when you install LR 6, you will also need to provide the serial number for LR 6 AND the serial number for the earlier version of Lightroom. I don't remember what order LR asks these questions, so you will need to read the questions carefully and provide the proper serial number.

Which bit version of Win 10 is on the notebook? If it is 32bit then you will need to upgrade it to a 64bit version. You can check that in the system link in Control Panel.

LR 6 and above only works on a 64bit OS.

Hi thanks for that, they are both 64 bit so I dont think thats the issue. I think its possibly Adobe won't allow two versions of Windows which is not good. Wonder if that means you can't have a PC and Mac using the same serial key. Its very frustrating. I contacted Adobe but they have not answered.

This simply is not true. You can install LR 6 on any two computers you want, with the same operating systems or different operating systems.

When you run into problems installing it, please tell us the exact steps you follow, how far you get in the procedure, and what the exact word-for-word error message is. We need lots and lots and lots of details here. Emphasis on "lots".
